Vonage iphone App

       Well here goes another rant as to how good the iPhone 4s really is. Too bad this also works with Blackberry & Android. Looks like this is turning into it Apple blog. But don't worry I'll get back to the cargo trailer soon. I just keep finding these new great things and I want to report back to you how well they work. 


       Today I found a Vonage  phone app which is very similar to Skype. It's super easy to install. "No stupid user name and password is required" Once installed you just start that app and it asked you to enter your phone number. Then it sends you a  six number code which you enter in to your app. Now you're set. You have the option to purchase some airtime for $4.99 or $9.99 directly from itunes. I decided to purchase the $9.99 phone time and try it out with some overseas calls to europe. I made some calls till my hand was completely cramped up and I could no longer hold the phone anymore. The cost was $2.42 OMG how cheap...I LOVE VONAGE !!


     The better option you have, is you can invite people in your contact list to download the Vonage app and then you can talk to them for free up to 3000 minutes per month, or at least till your blue in the face. It seems about 10% of my peeps are already using the Vonage app. I would assume if your on G3 you might be using your minutes ? If your on a WiFi then its not using your minutes. So someone smart person could get by with a cell phone and maybe 100 minutes per month. I now have 12,000 roll over minutes.




The sound was very good, you could not tell I was using a internet phone.

The All-In Hike Is 12,500 Miles By Foot. Yep

Sam Gardner from Houghton, Michigan (far reaches of the Upper Peninsula), set off on January 1st to solo hike all four of the continental United States’s long trails. Starting with the North Country Trail (which has only one recorded thru-hike in winter), Gardner will hike east to west before moving to the Pacific Crest Trail, then the Continental Divide, and finally the AT. Back to back to back. To back.

With the mileage totaling over 12,500, Gardner’s lofty goal of finishing the trip in one year requires an average of over 34 miles a day. He does note on his site that his real goal is to finish, no matter what the time frame. You can follow Sam along on his trip at his site, which is regularly updated with his progress. We’re pullin’ for ya’ buddy, Triple Crown +1.

Kolby Kirk, a.k.a Condor, hiked the Pacific Crest Trail, losing 90 pounds in the process and gaining this awesome three-minute study of his face in time. Have you seen it? It’s a terrific way of compressing five months of hiking, with humor, beauty, and a pretty sweet beard.

Condor says to keep an eye out for “a few Easter eggs, a bloody nose, a pair of broken sunglasses, my parents (twice), two fly-fishermen, a movie theater marque, a rainbow, a ‘buckle-up’ joke, a famous date shake from Hadley’s, the leg of a fake human skeleton, and my three-year-old niece sleeping.”

You should also take a look at his website, the Hike Guy, because Kirk is a man that sets goals and accomplishes them. In 2009, he determined to hike 100 times, and he did. He wanted to join search and rescue, and then set down the path of training to do it. Somewhere deep in the Arizona Desert, Mario Donovan is trying to make car camping more fun, convenient, and accessible. It was with this in mind that he started designing a camper top for the ever popular four-door Jeep Wrangler. Using 3D CAD to lay out a fiberglass shell and utilizing the construction methods used by boat builders, Donovan has built an extremely lightweight camper that adds just 440 pounds after all the Jeep parts have been removed.

This all translates to a comfy place to sleep, cook, and chill that has a small footprint without sacrificing too much of what the Jeep was designed to do, which is go anywhere. Interior headroom is more than 6’3″. There’s a bed for two, three-burner stove, tons of storage, access from the cab, an optional shower, and more. New for 2012, Jeep is powered by a 3.6L Pentastar V6 that is claiming 17MPG city and 21MPG highway — far from good, but also far from the worst it’s been for a vehicle of this capability — though of course this will be affected by the camper.

At 50 Gs, this is no commodity pickup topper. And obviously, for that kind of money, it’s only for people who really, really want to turn their Jeep into a camper. But for that, it’s one of a kind.

Update to the Air Dictate post of January 6 2012

      Being able to talk into the phone and having the text typed is fantastic. Right now I'm talking into my phone composing the text for this blog and I've attached the pictures. No computer is needed. No separate Internet connection is needed. you can never have more fun for only 99 cents.

        Here are some of the settings on the Apple iPhone 4s. The settings of the different keyboards will allow you to install different languages. Air dictate will then allow you to speak in a foreign language and it will type the information in that language. Once the language installed a little globe will appear on your keyboard you then just hold the globe down and a pop-up menu will appear with your different choices, select the language that you want to do your typing.


      The only drawback to blogging by phone is it does not give you the full range of texting and color and formatting choices. For those I can just come back to the computer later and make minor changes.

Finally progress electric panel has been installed

      Yahoo!! The electric panel was installed and the 300 inverter is working. One always wonders when you do this kind of project and spend $1500 if everything will work when it's finally all hooked up ? So far so good.  I will report on additional progress as soon as possible. 

Here is the inside of the entire panel again. 

Here you can see the two green lights on the 300 Watt sine inverter. 

The battery connection, just to be on the safe side I only install a 75 amp fuse.

The 1/0 wire I have used will hold up to a 150 amp fuse.  

Here you can see we are getting 114 Volts of pure sine a/c. 

Here is the finished cabinet on the wall.

I still need to connect the solar panels on the roof / 

connect the charge controller and then to test that system. 

Next will come the wallpaper I hope soon ?

I am feeling really bad with the flu or something, so I will keep it short today. 

Doing the Lords work part 3

        We are now coming down to the end stretch. A layer of Zypex has been applied. Once this layer has cured then some drainage rock can be installed. We are now on the downhill stretch. Hopefully by next weekend Sunday the project should be completed.


     For those of you who are interested in using Zypex for waterproofing, to be honest I'm not really impressed. The product is very expensive at $50 per bucket. Our project required two buckets. It is also not easily purchased and requires a trip to a specialty retailer. When the product is mixed per the manufactures instructions it gets hard inside the bucket within about two - three minutes. The package says it should be workable for 20 minutes. By mixing in about 30% more water than called for, I have found, that it is workable for about five minutes maximum. I would not recommend this product for waterproofing, instead preferring to use dry lock paint. This product is best for a professional who have worked with this before and know how to apply it properly.

Just putzing around with finding GPS info on pictures

         Its been totally insane busy at work so I have not found any time to work on my little trailer.


          I am trying to figure out how the GPS photo tagging works with pictures. Once I hit the road I would like to add the GPS - photo tagging to all my pictures. This would allow the viewer to click on the photo and then go to a Google map and see the exact location with the picture was taken. I'm still having some problems figuring out exactly how this would works. Apparently there's a difference between entering the longitude and latitude numbers versus entering the degrees minutes and seconds the numbers seem to be somewhat different. I found two different websites that allow you to do this. The first one seems to be better than the second one. I have found that most cameras do not put the GPS location on the pictures. If your camera does put GPS locations on the picture and you shrink the picture that data is lost. 




        One thing I sort of like is that when I look at other peoples blogs they have some really great pictures but you have no way to tell where the hell the picture was taken. That just drives me crazy because I might want to drive over to the area and check it out. If you can get the longitude and latitude that would allow you to also explore street view and there might be more interesting things that you would find in that area. Also sometimes people are out in the middle of absolutely nowhere and have some fantastic pictures. So I would like to add the longitude and latitude to my pictures once I hit the road so that people can follow up with more details. Some people have told me that they would worry about stalkers finding them. But I really don't think that would be an issue as mostly I would post the pictures once I have left the area.

       Another cool link that I found was street views, you can start with a zip code or even put in lat & long to get a street view picture, this only works in cities however, not out in the boonies. If I find more then I will come back and add those in. If you know some others please let me know ?

Final OverTheTop bed spread selection

Well boys and girls I can tell you it was lots and lots and lots and lots of work, making this bedspread selection. I have been looking for quite a long while now and I've not been  able to find anything that looked really great enough for OverTheTop. This selection however seems to fit the mark. I especially like the little circle or bull's-eye design on the pillows. The whole set is really great with the wallpaper, the flooring and also matches up great with the glass wall tiles. It also keeps the colors nice and light on the inside. The problem with looking at bedspreads is that the picture in the magazine or on the website, look way different than the actual bedspread in real life.  

I really like the design on these pillows.

Doing the lords work this Sunday Part 2

First we took out the old soil, then we installed a new sloped bottom   ( which was missing ) this will allow the excess water to drain out, through 4 - 6 weep holes. Next we will install water proofing, then more drainage rock and finally the planter soil, sprinklers and new plants. We are now about 50% done. so far this project is 2 x as big as the second planter box was added at the last minute & we are using 4 x more materials due to the missing bottom,  2,000+ pounds in concrete materials.

We are enjoying the sunshine this afternoon at Starbucks.

Doing the lords work this Sunday

      Today and yesterday I was helping some friends with the repairs of a flower planter at a church. This planter leaked water inside the building and needed to be fixed. It turned out the bottom was not level and it was dug out about 6" below the weep holes. This allowed the water to collect and leak into the building. When we finish the work in the next 2 weekends, I will show you how to solve the problem.

     The work was a little rough going as we had to break out some concrete with the jackhammer. The concrete appeared to be extra hard. Finally success, we were able to break out the old concrete so we can level out a drainage bed and water proof the building wall next weekend.

As you can see the front was about 6" higher and allowed water to collect.

Exterior LED Lights I saw at Lowes

I was almost tempted to buy one and test it out, but decided to hold off for now. This picture is great, it comes from my iPhone and I sent it at 470 kb. I had an option to send it at 1.5 mb but do not see the need, click on the picture and see how great it looks in large format. If you look on the tag, you will see that it comes with a vertical & horizontal cover plate.

This picture was sent at 460 kb and comes out bigger when you klick on it, normally my regular camera pictures are about 960 + kb. I will keep testing and report back what happens in the future. In the blogger window "as it first appeared" the picture was not bigger. BUTT - with a trick I was able to make it bigger on my desktop machine, so now you see a larger version.
